Women in Poland have gone on strike in protest against proposals for a total ban on abortions. The polish women declared strikes and are refusing to work as they took to the street of Warsaw in Poland on October 3, 2016.
" Black Monday", is the term given to this anti- abortion protest which has gained the backings of the Church in Poland, which is predominantly Catholic country. The bill proposed that "women who undergo abortion could face imprisonment of 5 years and the doctors found to have assisted in an abortion would also be liable for jail time". The only Exceptions are* An instance where the pregnancy is a product of rape or incest.
* Where the woman's life is in danger
* The foetus is severely deformed.
Most women in the protest claimed that they have been the minorities and have been unfairly treated with little to say on the issue. This bill could in turn have devastating effect and could lead to illegal abortions if a complete ban is allowed, which will ultimately put the woman's life at risk. Researches in Poland has shown that there are far more illegal abortions than legal ones between 10,000 and 15,000 compared to about 2,000 legal operations.
An estimate of 2,000 women rallied outside the Warsaw headquarters of the governing rightwing Law and Justice party. A protester, Johanta Brenicka told seersupdate " I don't like what the polish government is doing to women. Unfortunately, we are going in the direction of countries like Afghanistan and the worst countries of the world".
A 17-year high school student, Katazyna Goluch, also voiced her opinion stating " no one has the right to decide what I am supposed to do with my uretus. If this law comes into effect and I get raped and I get pregnant, I'll have to give birth. It's the same thing if the feotus is deformed, so we just have to say no".
Two other demonstrators were seen holding up placards stating " I wish I could abort my government". An elderly woman told seersupdate that " we are saying enough is enough over what is happening, to what the government, the church and the so called pro-life organization are planning for women. They want to introduce an anti-abortion law which will mean in many cases, women will be sentenced to death, it will take away the sense of security they have, the treatment options available when pregnancy puts their lives or health in danger".
