Little is known about what transpired within the Nigerian government in a deal to secure the release of the 21 chibok girls from the Jihadist Boko Haram group. In April 2014, 270 girls were abducted from the Nigerian Northern town of chibok by Boko Haram and since then, have been a torn in the hearts of the victim's family.
The girls were handed to a team from the international committee of the Red cross Red who provided assistance during the transfer of the girls. The girls were freed before dawn in the Northeastern Nigerian town of Banki, near the border with cameroon. A girl reportedly brought back a child who medical staff believed to be 20 months old.
Some of the victim's families accepted the news with hopes of a possible reunion with their lost girls while some had to nurse their injuries as some of the released girls confirmed that many other girls died in military bombardment.
The Jihadist Boko Haram sect has terrorized Nigerians for more than seven years and has greatly depleted the Country's economy as most of the revenue were used to fund the war against the insurgents. The evil sect are responsible for the death of thousands and has displaced more than 2 million people especially in the Northern part of the country with the aim of creating an islamic state.
Knowing that this terrorist won't just release the girls without having anything in return has raised quite a few eye brows and has led many to speculate that the government brokered a deal with the group. However, the government denied such claims but didn't rule out the option of " considering all options" in freeing the girls.
Vice President Osibajo attending to the girls |
The vice-president of Nigeria, Yemi Osibajo, said
" i met them about an hour ago and i can confirm they are in good health".
" Absolutely, there was no exchange of any kind. In the next few days or months, we will be able to negotiate the release of more of the girls".
As many as 57 girls escaped almost immediately in 2014, and one was found this spring.
