Dozens of Ethiopians were killed and injured after security forces fired warning shots during protest this morning in Ethopia's Oromia region. The shots were fired to disperse anti-government protest at a religious gathering where an estimated two million people were attending the annual Irrecha event in Addis Ababa. Some reports said that police responded after the protesters threw stones and plastic bottles, while some other reports said protesters demonstrated peacefully.
It should be a reminder that it was the same excessive use of force against protester that triggered the civil war in Syria as the citizens demanded for the current Syria president Bashar Al-Assad to step down. The Ethiopian Citizens were heard chanting " we need freedom" and " we need justice", their outcry prevented officials from delivering their speeches at the festival. It was also confirmed that at least 50 people were killed during a stampede after the police fired tear gas and bullets into the air.

An associated press reporter saw people holding up crossed wrists as this was an indirect demonstration of anti-government protest and police fired tear gas.

Merera Gudina

The government communications office said " as a result of the chaos, lives were lost and several of the injured were taken to hospital. Those responsible will face justice". Federalist Congress, Merara Gudina told Reuters that at least 50 people were killed, and also pointed out that that his people were attending to the victim's family. However, government blames rebel groups for stirring up the protest and provoking violence.

This latest act of display by the Ethiopian government has raised international concerns as human rights are being violated. The United States expressed concerns about the excessive force against protesters.
